This planet doesn’t support life but it might have done at some stage.

Remains found everywhere.

Made a promising discovery yesterday: a structure of two hundred and six pieces, composed mainly of calcium phosphate.

Gold, the fuel for our continued existence, is present in the form of a small chain around a part of the structure.

This finding might become our saviour if others such as this will be found in reasonable quantities.

Today, I have found a new object, buried in the sand.  Tests I conducted revealed it as a primitive video-recording devise.  I managed to decode the message a strange alien creature generated eons ago.  Its aspect was repellent, the sounds it produced were a strident cacophony.  I manged to get over that and the translator worked in the end.

I watched as the alien explained how its species evolved in time, extolled their inventions.  They called that progress but they started wanting more and more.  They fought wars for land, power, religion and politics.  They became decadent and lost touch with their nurturing Gaia.  They ignored the signs, the omens and when they finally realised what needed to be done it was too late.  Their air was becoming unbreathable, their water all dried up.

The alien was the last of its kind, its testament was a warning to any intelligent, sentient being.

I am frightened as I feel a sense of affinity with that long dead alien.  It could be me, this planet could be mine, this might become my species’ destiny too.

This is too close to home, a mirror for what is coming for us too.  I know our time is short and we need to change, to stop violating our planet.  How far can we travel across space and time to find more of what we have already destroyed through our greed?  Will the High Council believe the story of this barren world, the words of this long extinct alien?

I beg you, Commander, don’t ignore this, don’t bury the truth, we still have choices…

Communication interrupted… can you hear me?

Hello! This was a very enjoyable read. As with my story, I find it interesting when we, as humans, write as other beings that find humans repellent. That, in itself, gives voice to just how much we are messing up our planet. Generalized we, of course. Anyway! My favorite part has got to be the description of the human skeleton as a “structure”, leading the reader to be able to form whatever… Read more »

Wow, Greene. I really enjoyed reading this story, Greene. The idea and concept of the conversation of the aliens and humans between the past and the present were amazing. And then suddenly, the communication being cut off, which signaled the near end of the story, was very clean. You are great, Greene. Nice job.

You’re welcome. I wish it could be by accident. I hope so.

Brilliant story, Greene. So many wonderful, thought-provoking images. Alas, most of the people reading your story will be those already doing their best to inspire change but always the possibility that a few of the ‘unconverted’ will recognise themselves, and the wider community, before that communication is interrupted and it will help to make a difference. Well done!

The last sentence really struck home Greene. I couldn’t help thinking that communication was lost on purpose and, once again, history was repeating itself. Well written and very thought-provoking.

Why do my friends need to SignIn to read the post I shared?

Actually, this is a voting security feature. During public voting, only club members can read posts submitted for that contest. Since anyone reading the story is able to vote (click the Like button), we reserve these capabilities to members who SignIn. Before we implemented this security feature, people were voting multiple times and making the public voting process unfair and out of balance. To fix this, our staff finally decided to allow only members who SignIn to read the stories. Membership is free and easy, and ensures our club is safe, secure, and family-friendly!
