Let me share my Maldivian home with you – not the ostentatious water villas, champagne, caviar and your own personal butler. There’s another beautiful side to luxury – and it’s in the way my home tries endlessly to lead a life that is sustainable and honors its environment.
Close your eyes and let me take you on a journey.
It’s evening and the island might seem enveloped in darkness- but look carefully- it’s dinner by candlelight! Not in just some places- the whole island is lit with endless candles, only.
The air is fragrant and slightly smoky.
Dinner tonight is plant focused, inspired by the richness of the butterfly peas we have in bloom, with everything else coming from our local garden. This garden is any islanders dream – vibrant, abundant plants everywhere! And the best part – all the food is served on banana leafs, carefully cut off earlier in the day.
The air is filled with people’s voices coming to enjoy this time together, and remember why we are all so passionate about keeping this part of the world as alive as possible.
So, every Friday evening, all lights are replaced with candles, food is cooked in the kitchen earlier on in the day, so in the evening we can all come together and continue creating space and understanding into why is it so important that we continue being committed about our choices, the way we live, the way we eat and the way our lives are intertwined with the life of this amazing island we call home.
We all feel responsible for this life we have been given and the power of the choices we make.
So, from a place of love and respect – we let ourselves be guided in such a raw, organic way.
These weekly dinners are not just nourishment- they are a way of saying thank you for the abundance we have been given. And a reminder of how important every choice we make truly is.

Where can I get my tickets for the Maldives? This story thrilled me to my very bones. In amidst all the darkness of understandable and justified fear surrounding climate change, this story is a beautiful prayer of thanksgiving for simple pleasures – food which comes from the garden, the soft light of candles, the warmth and blessings of friends and community. Do you live in the Maldives? Is this based on a… Read more »

There is such a place, and the story is inspired by my time working in the Maldives. The focus on sustainability for this particular resort called Soneva is incredible! There is a garden, and the lights and the blessings of incredible people and the endless work made by the founders, for such a place to exist. Emirates and… Read more »
Welcome to the Voice club, Dorina. Your story is also like the true story of the life of our Subanen tribes here in our small village in ancient times. Gradually, the usual gatherings and sharing of foods are changing. But simple living is continuing until now. It is nice to live a simple life with an appreciation for nature. I really want to make a story like this about simple living with… Read more »
Thank you for the wonderful welcome Lotchie ! I never knew such a story of the Subanen tribes existed. Thank you for sharing that with me! You know, I asked myself the same question – where to start? And I realized I can only write about something that I have experienced in some way or another – I could only write about something I felt deeply for. Thank you for loving my… Read more »
