Hello, my name is Abigail (Abby) from Durham School of the Arts. This is my first year playing piano.
The Entertainer is a piece made by Scott Joplin, a famous ragtime composer of 40 original pieces, a ballet and 2 operas. The second child of six, Joplin was a former slave from North Carolina. He developed his musical knowledge with the help of local teachers. He eventually became a piano teacher and then started publishing music in 1895.
Originally made as a classic piano piece, The Entertainer was first recorded by Blues and Ragtime musicians which included them playing it on a guitar and a mandolin in 1928. This piece, even though being 121 years old, was used in an Oscar winning film, The Sting. The Marvin Hamlisch adaptation reached number three on the Billboard pop chart and number one on the easy listening chart in 1974.
This piece is a fun upbeat song that I’m sure almost everyone has heard. It’s a classic, going back to the year 1902. It’s fascinating seeing how this piece is so well known by so many people, and seeing people just stop and listen whenever they hear this song, it’s just so well known!
