I wish I could bottle the scent
Of lavender and sweet honeysuckle
Pervading the late evening air.

I wish I could capture an image
Of green trees, and a beautiful blue sea
Rushing over sand and pebbles on the shore.

I wish I could record the trilling song
Of every bird high up in the trees and sky,
In every country of the world.

I wish I could encapsulate the flavour
Of tangy citrus fruits and spices from afar.
The taste of sweet and sour now a mere memory.

All that’s left is touch, and that is through gloves
As I gather soil samples, searching for any sign of life
In this barren wilderness of a planet.

I check my oxygen levels and filter gauge.
There are so many toxic, lethal poisons in the air.
Did we ever really deserve the glory that was Earth?

This great poem brought tears to my eyes, Carrie. I totally share your sentiments in the first “I wish” verses. I have often wished I could bottle springtime fragrances, hold certain sights and sounds forever. I’m afraid that the answer to your final question is no. If it were yes, we wouldn’t be losing these glories. We would protect our home like we protect our precious children. I weep for all of… Read more »

Congratulations on your very successful attempt at non-rhyming poetry! I look forward to many more.

Hopefully in a few years we can write about how we humans finally stood strong and reclaimed the beauty and wonder of this world. I know there are many recent innovations and strides that offer help, and many many people dedicating their lives to solutions.

What a thoughtful read, Carrie. Your poem carried me away and brought tears to my eyes. “I wish” verses in the start is very effective that drives the reader emotion. Well done for writing a very moving poem.

The ending question…yes, we deserved it or we wouldn’t have had it…we are so negligent and irresponsible in ways we can’t imagine until the damage is done. What a insightful message you have sent to us all.

Why do my friends need to SignIn to read the post I shared?

Actually, this is a voting security feature. During public voting, only club members can read posts submitted for that contest. Since anyone reading the story is able to vote (click the Like button), we reserve these capabilities to members who SignIn. Before we implemented this security feature, people were voting multiple times and making the public voting process unfair and out of balance. To fix this, our staff finally decided to allow only members who SignIn to read the stories. Membership is free and easy, and ensures our club is safe, secure, and family-friendly!
