Heterochromia
The dog had heterochromia. One eye was a darkling brown and the other a bright striking green. Through each, she saw the world differently. Through the brown eye, she had seen hunger, mistreatment, abuse and cruelty. The brown showed an empty bowl, thick chain and no shelter.
Through the green eye she saw companionship, warmth and love. Through the green eye she saw repeated snuggles, ear and belly rubs. Well, the dog was a born optimist. Was it any wonder that she walked around with a permanent wink? Much better to look out at the world through a green eye!

Yes, Lotchie I could not resist the photo of the cheeky dog winking. All pets deserve the best from us.
I agree, Margarida.

I find it so uplifting reading about people who enthusiastically care for animals on a large scale.
Margarida, the first paragraph made me feel so angry at the thought of mistreated animals, however, that last line made me laugh. It is easy to imagine the dog in your story doing this, dogs being so loyal and eager to please. I can imagine them being willing to look away from the hardship and focus on the belly rubs. This is a great story!
