The Midnight Man
I’d followed the instructions exactly, sure I’d beaten the game. Only a bit of silliness. Wasn’t it?
Just before midnight I’d written my name on paper, added a drop of my blood. Lights off, I lit the candle, and placed the paper before my door. I knocked twenty-two times, opened and closed the door and wandered the house to make sure the Midnight Man couldn’t catch me.
Absolutely nothing happened.
Or so I thought.
They said I’d be safe after 3.33am. But they’re wrong.
I can’t get out.
The Midnight Man is here, whispering my name.
My candle goes out…

This game sounds a little like the Bloody Mary one, which put me off mirrors for life! I certainly wouldn’t consider playing either! ?
Hmmm.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Thompson. Not sure I should feel happy about spooking my readers ?. I don’t think there’s likely to be a sequel—if the Midnight Man has my protagonist, I’m not sure that the story would comply with VC’s family-friendly regulations!
A minute insect flew past me after I finished reading this, giving me the biggest fright!
The tension build-up gave a sense of impending doom. The final two sentences were terrifying!

How creepy is this? As John Travolta once sang ‘I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying’, but not in such a good way, Carrie! The clues were there in the buildup leaving me holding my breath! You didn’t disappoint! Very nicely done!
How creepy is it that you’ve just made a comment re a song from Grease when I just heard on the news that Olivia Newton John has passed away?!
Anyhoo, I couldn’t resist writing about this after reading about the game. I certainly wouldn’t play it myself, I’m way too superstitious (and chicken!). Glad you enjoyed the story anyway.

To Leave Comments - Please SignIn with GoogleIt really spooked me out when I heard the news. Very sad, she was such a talent.
The last two sentences make me almost fall off my chair. So terrifying. Well done, Carrie.
Thank you, Lotchie. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t play the game 🙂

Witchcraft has a silent approach and the knack of catching one unawares. The witch identifies you and…darkness. Like so many good tales of the supernatural, the finish is disturbing. One realises that it’s not just the candle that has been snuffed out. Or is it?? Nice one, Carrie.
Thank you so much, Allan. There is much speculation about what happens if the Midnight Man catches you. I have my own theories!

Unless of course you want Sam and Dean on the case of course.
I mean, if that was the guarantee then perhaps I would go looking for the monsters after all ??

Thank you, Steven. Personally, I can’t imagine anyone would be stupid enough to try it ?
