Scout and Her Shadow
“Careful, Mom. It might escape!” Scout giggles.
We’ve been reading ghost stories by candlelight. I stagger and stumble, pretending to grab my looming shadow.
“Come back here, you flickering night shade,” I cry.
“Come back here, you dark grey darling.” Scout holds out her arms to hug her shadow.
“Ghosts and spirits don’t have shadows,” Scout asserts. “But I do!”
Therefore I exist, I could almost hear her continuing.
“Mom, could you and Hero stay beside me while I go to sleep?” Her voice quivers.
My brave little girl, not sure who she is, wanting so much to be real.

The first story in the series is entitled “Scout Appears”. You can find all of the stories by going to the Search screen and typing “Scout”. Happy reading!
Oh, goodness, I forgot that Scout is a character in a book and not a real live girl!
Like Margarida, I was also carried away and forgot that Scout is just a book character. I am glad that you mention it in the last line, “…….wanting so much to be real.” Well done.

I reread the line in question. It’s writer thinking for her character? I embrace my need to rethink any dialogue I encounter, until I have a better understanding. If this makes sense?
